Caring for a loved one who is in need of extra help due to health problems, can be challenging.   Often times, caregivers are forced to be creative, because of the need to continue working to provide for their families.

How do you keep your loved one safe, if they are home alone for periods of time?

I have a very sweet patient that is 87 years old, and she was blessed with five faithful children who dote on her every need. She tells me stories of how she always had a job, and worked very hard in her life to raise her family.  Up until a year ago, she was still living alone, managing her home, and driving a car.

Sadly, she suffered a pretty significant stroke.  As a result of the injury to the brain, she can no longer walk and has very limited use of her left hand.  This very independent woman was now having to rely on her children to help her with her most basic needs.  The daughter opened her home to her mother, and assumed the role has her caregiver, but she is also employed, and working full-time.

There are short periods of time during the day when my patient is home alone, and a circulation of family members are in and out of the house to provide assistance.  Someone is always in close proximity to her, if she were need anything at all.  This works well because my patient is able to communicate what she needs, and she continues to desire her independence.  Unfortunately she cannot see very well, and is no longer able to use a telephone.  Their solution for this dilemma is the Nucleus Intercom with Alexa voice technology.

I was extremely impressed as the caregiver explained how this intercom device worked. This product it quite innovative and useful, and there are so many people that could really benefit from it.

There are other strategies for home monitoring of seniors that are inferior to this device.  One example is the use of an Emergency Response System.  You may remember those TV commercials, when the little lady is on lying on the floor and says “I have fallen and I can’t get up.”  This is an extremely popular service, and many people will wear a small button on a necklace.  If a situation arises, and assistance is needed, they can just push the button.  When alerted, the monitoring service will place a phone call to the person in distress.  If there is no answer on the phone, then EMS is dispatched to their residence.  If you’re loved one is unable to open the door, they will enter the residence by force.  There are some inherent flaws to this system.  What does someone do when they fall, and the button is across the room?  If your loved one becomes ill or suddenly confused, they may not be capable of asking for help, or effectively using a telephone.

Another popular solution is utilizing a home security system. Cameras can positioned throughout the home, and activity can be monitored by the caregiver, through an app on a mobile phone.  This allows for the ability to visually check on their loved one at any time.   While this does provide peace of mind, there are some flaws to this system as well.  Your loved one may find this type monitoring intrusive, and this system does not allow for interaction.  The telephone would still have to be the method for communication.

This is what sets the Nucleus Intercom apart….

  • This is an interactive system that allows for video chatting between devices or through an app on your smartphone.

  • The device itself is the size of tablet, appears to be very durable.

  • It has a touch screen, and hands free using Alexa voice interaction technology.

  • When positioned properly, the camera is able to capture the entire room.

  • Unlike a telephone, it does not have to be answered.  Someone can virtually peek into the room, without disturbing their loved one.

  • The picture and sound are a very nice quality.

  • The device interacts with your smart devices, allowing for music to be played and phone calls.

  • It plugs into the wall, and does require an internet connection via ethernet or Wifi.

I am excited to share this product with everyone.  It is a cost effective way to keep the lines of communication open with your loved one.  The use of technology is great, and the device can be used with ease, despite any functional impairments.  I rated the Nucleus Intercom a 9.5/10, only because it requires a connection to the internet.  This could potentially create an additional expense.  Although having a Nucleus Intercom could eliminate the need for your loved one to have a cellular phone, and might end up saving money in long run.

This is an absolutely amazing idea. Do they have them in Canada? I would love to be able to see my mom and talk to her at the same time. Especially in the middle of the night when she tells me that people keep coming into her room. I purchased a monitoring system but the home she is in doesn’t have wifi available so it was no good. This would be perfect.

I agree with you. I think this product has a lot of value. I would be surprised if your were not able to get this product in Canada, but it does require an internet connection to work as well. I wish you well.

Hello, I really found your site very informative. As times go by and the older you get, the more you think about your parents and family members who are much older. My parents are only in the 60’s but anything can happen and my dad has bad health as it is. I am really thinking of investing into the Nucleus Anywhere Intercom for the future. I don’t live too far away from my parents which is probably like a 20 minute drive so I can check on them through the intercom and head over there asap or call 911 if something happens etc.It will help me keep tract and to make them safer. I really do appreciate your site.

Wow, what a wonderful device for someone who needs wants to keep some independence but needs to be monitored at home. And Ipads are so easy to use that both my 84-year-old mom can figure it out! Does this integrate with Alexa? I’m asking because I already have Alexa and am wondering how it works with it. My mom is getting up there and I’m thinking this could work for us! Thank you so much for reviewing this product and making me aware of it!

What a wonderful device! I wish I had known about this when my Dad was alive and living on his own. Unfortunately, he did have some accidents because he was alone through the day and no one to check in on him. I would’ve bought this monitor for sure! He has since passed away, but I am going to make sure to recommend this to friends of mine who are still dealing with their elderly parents. This looks like a really awesome product and I would say a must-have item for sure for seniors! Money well spent and perfect peace of mind for everyone!

This article of yours is very interesting. We have parents in their 90’s that still are living on their own. They absolutely don’t want to give up their independence.

What you are presenting here is a wonderful alternative to keep them save and able to remain on their own for awhile longer.

Your article is informative and very educational. I was not aware of this particular technology. I will be talking to my wife and my parents and if we decide to go this way, I will get back to your site to do so,

As a holistic homeopathic practitioner, I absolutely love this review. I definitely agree with you that this device will revolutionize hospice care and make managing and caring for patients wayyy easier! And unless Wi-Fi sin’t already installed, it may not be such a major expensive issue at all. And it’s definitely worth it to check in on loved ones. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for taking the time. Technology is certainly helping to close these gaps.
